From Fabric to Material: Coating and Laminating Applications for Base Fabrics

As the backbone of functional materials, the quality of the base fabric directly impacts the durability and performance consistency of the final product.

When base fabrics undergo coating or laminating processes, they acquire additional properties such as waterproofing, flame retardancy, and resistance to aging, making them widely used in outdoor gear, industrial protective equipment, and packaging.

Coated Base Fabrics: A polymer paste (such as polyvinyl chloride, polyurethane, or acrylic) is evenly applied to the surface of the base fabric via squeegee or roller coating, then dried and plasticized to form a continuous film. These products are used to manufacture raincoats, tents, inflatable play structures, and similar items, requiring a smooth base fabric surface and strong adhesion to the coating.

Laminated Base Fabric: The base fabric is bonded to a film (such as microporous PTFE or polyurethane film) using hot melt adhesive or flame lamination processes. Breathable waterproof fabrics are a typical application, where the key requirement is that the weave structure of the base fabric does not impair the moisture vapor permeability of the film.

Processing Tips: Before coating, the base fabric must undergo pretreatment such as desizing and setting to remove surface impurities and stabilize the width. Tension control is also critical; excessive tension can cause uneven shrinkage of the fabric. When selecting a base fabric, pay close attention to its melting point, surface energy, and thermal shrinkage rate, as these parameters significantly affect the subsequent lamination strength.

As the backbone of functional materials, the quality of the base fabric directly impacts the durability and performance consistency of the final product.
